| Omaha inmate dies while on furlough |

BY CATHARINE HUDDLE / Lincoln Journal Star State corrections officials say Megan Schrunk died Saturday while on furlough from the Community Corrections Center — Omaha. Schrunk, 30, was on a home visit, according to the state Department of Correctional Services. Edward Fabian, public information officer for the work-release center, said the center got a call from Omaha police about 6:30 Saturday evening saying they’d been called to the Omaha residence where Schrunk was staying and “she’s no longer alive.” Fabian said the Omaha Police Department is investigating the cause of death. Calls to OPD were referred to the homicide division, but detectives there would not release any information. Fabian said Schrunk was on a 72-hour furlough. “That tells me right away that she was doing well on the program,” he said. “These furloughs are a privilege that is earned.” He said Schrunk left the center to begin her furlough about 3 p.m. Saturday.
