Bibb commission eliminates vacant positions By Jennifer Burk - macon.com The Bibb County Commission has eliminated all vacant positions in its fiscal 2010 budget and will not hire new personnel next year, Commission Chairman Sam Hart said Friday. The decision comes after two weeks of budget hearings where commissioners heard from departments and agencies requesting more than $96 million. Funding requests outpace Bibb’s projected revenue by more than $15 million — a figure that has waxed and waned throughout the process. The hiring freeze excludes sheriff’s deputies and corrections officers. No layoffs, furloughs or pay cuts are expected for Bibb’s nearly 900 full- and part-time employees, Hart said. “The general consensus is we need to protect the county employees because we’re going to be asking them to do more with less,” Commissioner Elmo Richardson said. Bibb currently has 15 vacant positions, and eliminating them will save about $600,000 in salaries and benefits, Human Resources Director Marilu Cowan said. Departments had requested an additional six positions in next year’s budget, she said, and not filling those will save about $180,000. “We need to eliminate any vacant positions right now because I don’t want to eliminate anybody’s job later,” Commissioner Joe Allen said. Hart notified department heads of the decision in a memo. “We appreciate all of you pitching in to maintain our operations and to continue to deliver services to the taxpayers and fellow employees as we face these situations together,” he said in the memo. The commission already had decided not to include a 4 percent merit salary raise for employees in its budget. Employees typically receive a 4 percent merit increase each year, and excluding it saves more than $700,000, commissioners were told at a budget retreat in March.Read more.
