Blaine, Wash. – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in Blaine, Wash., intercepted a Mexican and a Guatemalan national on May 31, who were riding aboard a railroad car after illegally entering the United States from Canada.

The two stowaways were attempting to enter the U.S. illegally when the train passed through a CBP x-ray imaging station where an officer spotted their outlines aboard a freight car. They were immediately taken into custody, processed for removal from the United States by CBP officers and were turned over to the custody the Canadian Border Services Agency.

“Our increased vigilance is resulting in preventing illegal aliens from entering our communities,” said Service Port Director Gregg Alvarez. “It isn’t everyday that we discover illegal aliens hiding on rail cars but when we do there is a sense that we may have prevented a terrible mishap, as this is a dangerous undertaking.”

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
