Aguadilla, Puerto Rico – The Ramey sector of the U.S. Border Patrol announced today that three local law enforcement units in Puerto Rico will be recipient’s of Operation Stonegarden grant money awarded for fiscal year 2009.

The announcement was made jointly by Ramey Sector Acting Chief Patrol Agent Hector Black and Puerto Rico Police Department Superintenden, Jose Figueroa Sancha.

Municipal Police Departments from Aguadilla, Cabo Rojo and Lajas will share an allocation of $529,947 for a three-year period in which they will engage in joint special operations with the Ramey Sector Border Patrol and the Puerto Rico Police Department’s Joint Forces of Rapid Action.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano made the announcement Thursday that fiscal year 2009 Operation Stonegarden grants—totaling $60 million—were awarded to 13 Border States and the Territory of Puerto Rico to enhance the capabilities of federal, state, local and tribal law enforcement agencies to jointly secure U.S. borders and territories.

This year, eligibility for Operation Stonegarden awards was expanded to include 39 applicants—24 more than the previous year —encompassing states with international land and coastal borders.

“Out of the new eligible applicants and within the national Border Patrol structure, Puerto Rico is the only coastal sector that received an award,” Black said.

The grant funding will be used by the recipient municipalities for overtime, travel, equipment and other related costs in order to further increase law enforcement presence along the western coast of the island.

“This program will enhance our collaboration and efforts between federal, state and local law enforcement to protect the islands coastline against illegal traffic,” Sancha said.

This new allocation of resources will aid in ongoing aerial and marine based joint operations that have served to aid in the detection, interdiction and apprehension of those who attempt to illegally enter or smuggle any person or contraband across the United State’s sovereign borders.

Established in 1987, the Ramey Border Patrol Sector is the smallest of the three coastal border sectors and the only one located outside the continental United States. It has only one station with an area of responsibility that extends 12 miles out from the shoreline to the US territorial water limits, and includes 730-shore border miles, throughout Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
