San Diego - U.S. Customs and Border Protection yesterday made a pair of drug seizures that took place in the Southern California towns of Boulevard and Temecula.

A 105.8 pound marijuana seizure took place at 12:20 p.m., after agents stopped a Ford Bronco traveling northbound on Interstate 15 in Temecula. A Border Patrol detector dog alerted on the vehicle and a subsequent search revealed the drugs stashed within the vehicle’s gas tank.

An inspection of the gas tank revealed a soldered cut in the tank. When agents peeled back the top of the tank they discovered more than 100 pounds of marijuana.]

A 21-year-old male Mexican citizen was driving the SUV and was arrested upon the discovery.

An hour earlier, agents discovered three nylon backpacks that contained 157.7 pounds of marijuana inside an abandoned trailer on Tierra de Luna, less than a mile north of the international border.

The agents made the seizure after they pursued a group of three suspected illegal aliens on foot in the rural neighborhood. One of the illegal aliens, a 34-year-old male Mexican national, was apprehended, while the other two fled to Mexico. Near the location of the apprehension, the agents spotted footprints leading into the abandoned trailer. Agents suspect the man they apprehended was involved with smuggling the drugs because he bore signs on his shoulders of wearing a heavy backpack.

The total estimated street value of both marijuana seizures is $158,100. The smuggling suspects and drugs from both seizures were turned over to respective multi-agency, anti-drug task forces.

So far in the 2009 fiscal year, Border Patrol agents have seized more than 17,500 pounds of marijuana and 1,050 pounds of cocaine in San Diego sector.
