Four Bernalillo County (N.M.) Metropolitan Detention Center officers have been arrested in connection to the beating of three inmates at the jail earlier this year, including the commanding officer at the time. The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office says up to 20 officers were involved in the February 24th beating, which lasted 17 minutes. As a result of an investigation into the incident, four corrections officers were arrested. Two of the officers have already been fired from their jobs, one resigned, and a fourth officer is on leave pending a hearing on the matter. Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White held a news conference Thursday afternoon to announce the arrests. White played parts of a surveillance video that showed the shackled inmates, who had been transferred from Valencia County, being pushed into walls and thrown face-first to the floor. Lex Pope, who was a sergeant the night of the beatings, is charged with three counts of conspiracy, three counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, three counts of kidnapping, and three counts of assault with intent to commit a violent felony. His bond was set at $50,000. Gregory Jordan, who was a lieutenant and the commanding officer the night of the beating, is charged with three counts of conspiracy, three counts of accessory to commit aggravated battery/bodily harm, three counts of accessory to kidnapping, and three counts of assault with intent to commit bodily harm as an accessory. His bond was set at $50,000. Enrico Ruiz, a corrections officer the night of the beating, is charged with three counts of conspiracy, three counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, three counts of kidnapping, and three counts of assault with intent to commit a violent felony. His bond was set at $75,000. Ted Arana, who was also a corrections officer the night of the beating, is charged with three counts of conspiracy, one count of aggravated battery with bodily harm, three counts of kidnapping, and three counts of assault with intent to commit a violent felony. His bond was set at $50,000. A total of eight officers have either been fired or resigned since the beatings were discovered. |
