Jail booking could fill state funding gap

Cities booking suspects in the county’s detention facilities will be charged $246 to cover processing costs under a proposal Sheriff Greg Munks is bringing before the Board of Supervisors Tuesday.

The county already imposes a $215 jail access fee but Munks wants to increase it to fill the difference between the cost and the state reimbursement. Charging $246 will cover the state fund’s gap which is estimated for San Mateo County at $75,865, according to Munks’ calculations.

Booking fees are required of each arresting agency each time a suspect is taken into custody at the Maguire Correctional Facility or Women’s Correctional Center. Since 1994, the fee has ranged from $159 to the flat $202 rate of 2003 through 2005. In recent years, booking fees were considered fair game by state legislators seeking ways to lower the debt and balance the budget. Read more.
