Coryell Explores New Jail Options By Alicia Lacy Killeen Daily Herald CORYELL COUNTY – Due to space limitations, Coryell County officials are exploring options for a new jail facility, but nothing has been decided. Chief Deputy Joe Blakely said there have been space issues at the jail for the last few years. Lt. Kenneth Green, Coryell County Sheriff's Office jail operations commander, said in 2007 the number of inmates at the jail jumped to about 4,000 inmates going in and out of the jail for the year from about 2,000 the previous year. Since the increase, the numbers continue to grow, but not as significantly. At the peak, 37 inmates have been housed in other county jails due to overcrowding. The current Coryell County facility can house up to 92 inmates. As of Thursday afternoon, 25 Coryell County inmates were housed in other jail facilities and Green said he was searching for places to house an additional 10 inmates. Moving inmates elsewhere Blakely said the overflow of Coryell County inmates are housed in Limestone, Falls, McLennan and Kaufman counties.
