Warden: County Needs Bigger Prison

WILKES-BARRE -- Luzerne County needs a bigger, more modern prison, Warden Joseph Piazza said Monday.

It was the first time Piazza weighed in on the issue. He has been warden since February and replaced Gen Fischi, who retired as warden in December.

In April 2008, Luzerne County Commissioner Chairwoman Maryanne Petrilla and Commissioner Stephen A. Urban halted work designing a new prison with 1,500 beds. They said a prison of that size, which would cost more than $100 million to build, needed to be justified by a proper analysis.Read more.
