Lights Out for Smokers in State's Prison System By Matt Tomsic Published: June 18, 2009 The Virginia Department of Corrections announced that its state prisons will go tobacco-free starting Feb. 1 in an effort to improve the health and safety of inmates and staff. The ban won’t affect the Danville City Jail or the Pittsylvania County Jail since both facilities do not allow tobacco. Eight of Virginia’s 40 prisons already ban tobacco. Chesapeake’s Indian Creek Correctional Center was the first to go smoke-free when it banned the substance in 2000. “Because of the success of these eight facilities, the decision to go entirely tobacco-free was made in the fall of 2008,” said Larry Traylor, spokesman for the Virginia Department of Corrections. Gene Johnson, the director of the department, notified all inmates in a Jan. 5 memo. “Even when change is for the better, it can be difficult,” Johnson wrote.
