Inmates being monitored Amid Possible Swine Flu Outbreak at Detention Center June 17, 2009 Fernando Del Valle PORT ISABEL — Federal health officers are treating 12 illegal immigrants for "flu-like symptoms" while monitoring 54 inmates at a detention center here, an official said Wednesday. Officials have not confirmed any H1N1 swine flu cases among inmates at the Port Isabel Detention Center, said Nina Pruneda, a spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in San Antonio. But she confirmed health officials are treating 12 inmates in the detention center's clinic. Officials are also monitoring 54 inmates restricted to a dormitory as a result of their contact with an inmate with flu-like symptoms, Pruneda said. "We are restricting movement ... as a precaution," she said. "None of the detainees in the dorm are slowing flu-like symptoms. There are no confirmed cases of H1N1 at the Port Isabel Detention Center." Pruneda declined to respond to several questions, including when officials discovered flu-like symptoms among the inmates and whether employees showed any such symptoms. She also declined to disclose whether officials had found symptoms among inmates of the Willacy Detention Center in Raymondville.Read more.
