A woman who was injured in a car crash involving an uninsured inmate who was driving a work release van filed a lawsuit Friday against the Alabama Department of Corrections and several of its employees. Attorneys for Gail Munnerlyn filed the lawsuit in Alabama Circuit Court. The suit, which also names Commissioner Donal Campbell as a defendant, seeks to stop the practice of allowing inmates to drive state vehicles without insurance. "I believe that legally, morally, and from a public safety standpoint, convicts should not be allowed to drive without insurance," Munnerlyn attorney Kenny Mendelsohn said in a statement. "Apparently commissioner Campbell believes that it is okay. But that's what they built the courthouse for." Department of Corrections spokesman Brian Corbett said Friday afternoon he had not seen a copy of the lawsuit and that the decision to not insure inmates is one made by the state Department of Finance. Munnerlyn is also seeking compensatory damages for physical injuries she received in the crash and medical expenses. |
