St. Landry OKs jail expansion By Bob Ardoin ELOUSAS — Preliminary plans for expanding capacity at the St. Landry Parish Jail were approved Wednesday night by the Parish Council. The council voted 12-1 to allow parish President Don Menard to use a portion of $1.1 million previously earmarked for jail construction to increase space for a maximum of 125 more prisoners. Sheriff Bobby Guidroz told the council last month that the parish jail in Opelousas across from the parish courthouse, has a capacity for 232 inmates, but normally the facility exceeds that limit. Guidroz had suggested using two closed elementary schools at Morrow and Melville as possible locations for auxiliary jails, but that option was not discussed Wednesday night. On Thursday, Guidroz said he is still considering using the schools as work-release facilities, but has no timetable for any of the projects. “If that happens, it will be a Sheriff’s Department project rather than a parish government project. If I do negotiate (for use of the schools), it might be for some type of lease agreement with the board,” Guidroz said. Menard said funding for creating dormitory-style housing at the parish jail would come from remaining bond money collected from a 1.25 mills property tax obtained to pay construction costs when the present parish jail was built more than 30 years ago.
