Rankin jail adding 96 beds $7M expansion is expected to be occupied by mid-July Justin Fritscher -June 29, 2009 BRANDON — A 96-bed expansion of the Rankin County Detention Center is expected to be finished early next month, a blessing for officials who say the jail has been teetering at capacity for some time. "We need the room," Sheriff Ronnie Pennington said. "It'll desperately help out." Construction crews are putting final touches on the 21,579-square-foot addition, and Pennington said a meeting will be held Thursday for architects and officials "to make sure that everything looks OK." Pennington said he expects the jail's $7 million expansion to be occupied by the second week of July. The wing will include a kitchen and four large bunk rooms for inmates booked on misdemeanor charges. The addition will free space in the existing jail for inmates booked on felony charges. Meals will be cooked on-site, which the sheriff said will save money because food won't have to be brought in for inmates. The existing jail, located behind Rankin County Circuit Court, was built in 2000 and has a capacity just above 300. With the expansion, it will hold 405. Space has been a persistent issue at the jail this past year. Inmates were booked at other prisons on some occasions, and the county had to foot the bill. "I imagine as soon as we open the doors it's going to fill up," Pennington said. Law enforcement and county officials have discussed other options - including building a penal farm.Read more.
