Sheriff's Office locks down jails once again By JJ Hensley The Sheriff's Office locked down Maricopa County jails on Monday for the second time in the last six weeks after deputies learned of a large-scale disturbance that inmates were planning for later this week. The lockdown means nearly 10,000 inmates will remain in their cells, and the jails are closed to visitors. Sheriff's deputies will continue to transport more than 800 inmates to court hearings each day, and inmates on work release and work furlough will continue to participate in those programs. Sheriff Joe Arpaio said he made the decision to lock down the entire jail system after learning of a racially-tinged disturbance that was brewing between Hispanic and Black inmates. Read more.
