Cocaine, Meth Intercepted at Border Patrol Checkpoint Pine Valley, Calif. — On June 26, a 53-year-old male Mexican national was arrested upon his attempt to smuggle nearly $66,000 worth of cocaine and methamphetamine through a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint on Interstate 8 in Pine Valley. At about 2:45 p.m., Border Patrol agents encountered the man as he approached the checkpoint in a Buick LeSabre. During the inspection, the man displayed nervous behavior and provided inconsistent answers to the agents’ questioning. The agent referred the vehicle to secondary inspection for further examination. Border Patrol agents observed anomalies in the vehicles carpet, floor molding and rocker panels leading them to conduct a further inspection of the interior of the Buick. Agents discovered the rocker panels had an access plate cut into them. Inside the driver side rocker panel held a 1.45 pound package of cocaine. The passenger side rocker panel held two plastic containers, for a total of 2.35 pounds of methamphetamines. The Mexican national driver, who possessed documents to travel legally in the country, was arrested and he and the drugs were turned over to a multi-agency, anti-drug task force. As a part of the Border Patrol’s defense-in-depth enforcement approach, checkpoint operations serve as a valuable tool to prevent the smuggling of humans, drugs and other contraband to the interior of our country. U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws. |
