Facility may see more cuts By Dave Seaton Editor's note: Dave Seaton is a member of the prison task force. Further cuts in the budget of the State Department of Corrections may be coming, Winfield Correctional Facility Warden Emmalee Conover told a task force formed to support the facility at a meeting Thursday. She did not know when the cuts would come, Conover said, or how deep they might be. But she pointed out state revenue fell $100 million short of needs in May. "I expect the June revenue to be miserable," Conover said. Gov. Mark Parkinson has said he would recommend further cuts in the fiscal 2010 budget year, which begins July 1. Parkinson also has authority to allocate cuts already made by the Legislature. "Some rumors say the governor will cut across the board, and others say he'll be selective," Conover said. A cut of 5 percent would not surprise her, she added. A total of 12 percent has already been cut from the Department of Corrections budget for fiscal years 2009 and 2010, according to Conover.Read more.
