CBP Officers at Pharr/Reynosa International Bridge Find Cocaine Hidden in Secret Vehicle Compartment Pharr, Texas - U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers working at the Pharr/Reynosa International Bridge seized close to 20 pounds of cocaine with an estimated street value of close to $640,000. On June 26, CBP officers working at the Pharr/Reynosa International Bridge, northbound vehicular lanes, came in contact with a male traveler who was driving a 2007 Dodge Caliber sedan. After the initial primary inspection, the driver and vehicle were referred to secondary for an intensive examination. In secondary, “Laika”, a narcotic detector dog, alerted officers to the presence of narcotic odors emanating from the vehicle’s front bumper. A non-intrusive image scan revealed anomalies within the car’s front firewall area. In the firewall area, officers found a secret compartment which concealed seven cocaine packages. The driver, identified as Mauricio Cervantes Diaz, a Mexican citizen, age 20 from Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico was arrested on federal drug charges. After his arrest, Cervantes Diaz was transferred to the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement special agents who continue to investigate this failed smuggling attempt. Pending appearance before a U.S. Magistrate, Cervantes Diaz remains incarcerated. CBP officers seized the cocaine and the 2007 Dodge Caliber. Dave Fluty, CBP acting port director said, “K-9 Laika did great work in alerting officers to the presence of narcotic odors.” Fluty further said, “After Laika, officers quickly focused their attention to the firewall area where they found cocaine packages hidden in a secret compartment. Great work by all.” U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws. |
