Agitated inmates evacuated after unleashing sprinkler system Flood of emotions By Jessica Van Sack Monday, July 6, 2009 Unruly inmates at the maximum security Middlesex Jail in East Cambridge sabotaged the sprinkler system yesterday, flooding the building and forcing a mass evacuation as tensions rose amid a suspected swine flu outbreak. Middlesex County Sheriff James V. DiPaola and his staff scrambled to bus 187 of the jail’s most dangerous criminals to county prisons throughout the state following the incident yesterday morning. The mischief occurred in a section of the prison known as tier 18, where overcrowding forces the prisoners to sleep and live on beds set up in the hallway beside the cells. At about 11:30 a.m., inmates became agitated after 10 fellow prisoners and two staff members came down with flu-like symptoms, DiPaola said. It was unclear whether those inmates, quarantined in the prison infirmary, were suffering from swine flu following a case on June 30, when an inmate was diagnosed with a suspected but still-unconfirmed case of the virus, known as H1N1. The two staffers were diagnosed with swine flu as well. “There were nine instigators,” DiPaola said. “There was a bit of hysteria that broke out, and some inmates took advantage of the situation.” Inmates smashed ceiling pipes that carry water to the building’s fire suppression system, setting off the sprinklers and flooding the entire building, DiPaola said.
