Escaped Muscogee inmates recaptured in Las Vegas

By Alan Riquelmy

Two Muscogee County inmates who escaped from a work detail June 30 were recaptured early Wednesday in Las Vegas.

Herman Derek Freeman, 33, and Gregory Michael Walker, 32, were walking toward their hotel on the 900 block of South Las Vegas Boulevard around 1:30 a.m. EDT when officers with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department took them into custody, said Lt. Ted Lee.

Officers in Las Vegas had seen the 1991 Mazda Miata that Georgia officials said the pair used to escape. They realized it was the car allegedly stolen by inmates and set up surveillance, said Officer Bill Cassell with the LVMPD.

“They drove their little Mazda out here,” Cassell said. “As they approached the hotel room, they took them into custody.”

Walker was arrested without incident. Freeman, however, tried to flee and an electronic control device, a Taser, was used once on him, Cassell said.

Both were in the back of a police car within five minutes, the officer added.

The escapees, wearing casual clothes when arrested, were in prison uniforms when they allegedly hopped in the Mazda near their work detail at Lake Oliver Marina. Officials have said that the keys were left in the car when they escaped.

Freeman was serving a 15-year sentence for charges including aggravated assault, armed robbery and obstruction of an officer.

Walker was serving a six-year sentence for first-degree forgery.

The men are being held on fugitive from justice warrants out of Georgia, said Muscogee County Prison Warden Bill Adamson. Ultimately, they’ll be extradited to Georgia, though Adamson doesn’t know how long that will take.
