CBP Officers Seize Suitcase Full of $400K in Heroin at Hidalgo Port of Entry July 07, 2009 Brownsville, Texas – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Hidalgo port of entry seized $408,000 in heroin and detained a 33-year-old female. On July 6, CBP officers at the Hidalgo International Bridge referred Gwendolyn Robles Medina, a 33-year-old Mexican citizen and resident of Guadalupe, Nuevo Leon, Mexico for CBP secondary inspection. Robles Medina arrived at the Hidalgo crossing as a passenger in a taxi coming from Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico. In secondary during an intensified examination CBP officers discovered discrepancies to a suitcase belonging to the Robles. An imaging system scan indicated anomalies within the suitcase. “Laika,” a narcotic detector dog, alerted officers to the odor of narcotics emanating from the baggage. Further examination of the suitcase by CBP officers revealed two packages containing a total of more than five pounds of heroin hidden within the liner of the suitcase. The heroin from this seizure has an estimated street value of $408,000. Gwendolyn Robles Medina was arrested by CBP officers and turned over to the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement special agents who investigated the seizure and processed the taxi passenger on federal drug charges. “While protecting of our nation's borders from terrorists and terrorists weapons is our primary job, Hidalgo’s CBP officers intercepted this well hidden load of heroin within a traveler’s suitcase. This interception was an outstanding job by Hidalgo’s CBP officers,” said Larry D. Fluty, CBP acting port director, Hidalgo/Pharr. U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws. |
