Six inmates at two Broward County (Fla.) jails have been diagnosed with a highly contagious and drug-resistant staph infection, an ailment that may have been passed on by a former Palm Beach County inmate, authorities said last Wednesday. The outbreak at the stockade in Fort Lauderdale and the north jail in Pompano Beach was identified last Monday, Broward Sheriff's Office spokesman Jim Leljedal said. The infected inmates are being treated with antibiotics in the infirmary, and none of the cases is life threatening. None of the inmates was identified. The Sheriff's Office said it has taken measures to contain the outbreak, including warning judges and attorneys who come in contact with inmates, posting bulletins with information on the infection and preventative measures, and reviewing cleaning procedures. "Obviously, we're concerned about it spreading," Leljedal said. "We believe we will be able to nip this in the bud." Leljedal said jail officials are investigating whether an inmate who transferred from the Palm Beach County Jail brought the bacteria, called methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus. Staph infections have infected more than 300 inmates and an assistant public defender in Palm Beach County since September. |
