Olympian Nicole Bobek was a hit at Hudson County jail, inmates say by Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal Sunday July 12, 2009, 5:30 PM Former figure skating champion Nicole Bobek organized a workout class for fellow inmates during her stay at Hudson County jail, which she described as a "four-star" establishment compared to the Florida jail where she was held, inmates told The Jersey Journal. Interviews with inmates and workers at the jail revealed that Bobek mentioned she was an Olympian, but didn't make it a big deal; and she was a model prisoner. In jail, Bobek also ran into a friend she'd never seen before, but who was also swept up in the Hudson County methamphetamine ring bust in which 20 people, including the 1995 U.S. skating champ, were arrested. "I knew her from before, through my boyfriend, but when we finally met, she was like 'Oh Beverlyn, it's you!,'" Beverlyn Sierra said Friday, speaking in the jail "dorm" where Bobek was housed for three days from July 4 to July 6. She was released on bail last Monday. Edward Cruz Jr., Sierra's boyfriend and a former corrections officer at the jail, was charged last month as the leader of the meth ring. Sierra, 24, of Belleville, is charged with conspiracy to distribute over 5 ounces of methamphetamine. "She was very smart and she fit in with everyone, but she seemed a little scared," said Sierra. "She would always like to be alone and she always asked me for a lollipop." Sierra was one of a handful of inmates that did sit-ups and pushups with Bobek, who made tube tops for the inmates out of T-shirts. Sierra's tube top had "XOXO" written on the front and "Ed's loves Bev," on the back. Rosemarie Williams, 45, jailed on a drug charge, is the liaison between corrections officers and inmates on the tier. It was her job to tell Bobek the rules and give her supplies "(Bobek) was happy, smiling, giggling, but she was upset she was here," said Williams. "You could tell she didn't belong here. Some people are revolving doors and you can tell. She was classy. We told her everybody makes mistakes, you just have to learn from them." Bobek told Williams she enjoyed skating, but her life went in a different direction and she regretted it, Williams said, adding "but she was hopeful." Read More. |
