Two Vermont inmates to be returned from Kentucky prison

Two Vermont inmates who said they were sexually assaulted by an officer at a private Kentucky prison will be returned home, possibly as early as this week, Corrections Commissioner Steven Gold said last Thursday.
One of the prisoners reported last month that he had been sexually assaulted by the officer, who was fired May 3 by the operator of the Marion Adjustment Facility, Corrections Corporation of America.
An initial investigation into the incident revealed another Vermont inmate who said he was sexually assaulted by the same officer, Gold said. The prison operator and Kentucky authorities also are investigating allegations that the officer may have been involved in sexual acts with other inmates earlier this year.
A summary of the investigation offered by the Vermont Department of Corrections said the officer entered the first Vermont inmate's cell on the afternoon of April 29. About four hours later, the summary said, the inmate told prison officials that he had been sexually assaulted. He was later taken to a local hospital for medical observation.
Vermont prison officials traveled to Kentucky that weekend to meet with the inmate and police and corrections officials in that state.
The investigation summary said the officer's actions were in "clear violation of established policies and procedures."
The Vermont Corrections Department did not release either of the men's names, ages or hometowns.
Gold said he told Corrections Corporation of America he wanted a full report of the alleged abuses by next week. Meanwhile, he said, it's possible the two inmates could be returned to Vermont this week.
Gold said he decided to return the inmates to Vermont to ensure their safety.
