Sheriff hopes to contain flu outbreak at jail July 14, 2009 Sheriff Bill Gore and county health officials yesterday said their staffs are working to contain a flu outbreak that started in the South Bay Detention Facility and may have spread to the county's six other jails. Two inmates have tested positive for swine flu, also known as H1N1 influenza A. In addition, 45 male inmates and 11 female inmates have reported flulike symptoms. Overall, 870 male inmates and 281 female inmates might have been exposed to the virus, said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. County officials also have identified 11 deputies with flulike symptoms and 350 who might have been exposed to the virus. The local jails have an indefinite suspension of social visits, and court hearings have been postponed for inmates with flulike symptoms. Read More. |
