Ex-Financier Gets 2 Extra Years in Prison for Fleeing July 16, 2009 Samuel Israel III, a former hedge fund manager who faked his own death in an effort to avoid a 20-year prison term for defrauding investors, was sentenced Wednesday to two extra years. Judge Kenneth M. Karas of Federal District Court in White Plains, said Mr. Israel was “thumbing his nose at the system” when he staged a suicide and jumped bail last year. He was accused of taking hundreds of millions from investors in his hedge fund firm, Bayou, based in Stamford, Conn. Mr. Israel surrendered after 22 days on the run. Read More. |
