CBP in South Texas Seizes $1.7 Million in Cocaine, Marijuana During Past 2 Days Wednesday, July 22, 2009 Brownsville, Texas – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers this week at the Brownsville, Texas port of entry discovered and seized more than $1.7 million in cocaine and marijuana and arrested three persons in connection with the enforcement actions. On Monday, CBP officers working at the Brownsville and Matamoros International Bridge encountered Jaime Gomez, a 36-year-old U.S. citizen from Brownsville, Texas as the driver of a black 2002 Buick Rendezvous. During the examination, CBP officers discovered discrepancies in the dashboard area of the vehicle. “Jackhammer,” a narcotic detector dog, alerted to the odor of narcotics emanating from the vehicle. An intensive examination of the Buick by CBP officers revealed 20 packages containing a total of more than 50 pounds of marijuana hidden within the dash of the Buick Rendezvous. The cocaine from this enforcement action has an estimated street value of $1.6 million The driver was arrested by CBP officers and turned over to the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement special agents who investigated the seizure and will process the driver on federal drug charges. The second, a marijuana seizure, also occurred on Monday at the Gateway International Bridge. A CBP officer referred a white 2002 Ford F-150 driven by Omar Proa, a 33-year-old male U.S. citizen and resident of Brownville for a secondary inspection. During the examination, CBP officers discovered discrepancies to the tires of the Ford. “Cisco,” a narcotic detector dog, alerted to the odor of narcotics emanating from the tires of the F-150. An X-ray revealed anomalies to the tires of the pickup truck. CBP officers’ intensified examination of the truck’s tires revealed hidden metal compartments within the four tires that contained a total of close to 92 pounds of marijuana. The marijuana has an estimated street value of more than $92,000. The driver was arrested by CBP officers and turned over to the custody of ICE special agents who investigated the seizure and will process the driver on federal drug charges. The third case occurred Tuesday and involved the seizure of a load of marijuana. CBP officers working at the Brownsville and Matamoros International Bridge came in contact with 19-year-old Luis Fabian Ramirez, a U.S. citizen and resident of Palmetto, Fla. “Gulliver,” a narcotic detector dog, alerted officers to the odor of narcotics emanating from within the body of the 2003 Dodge Intrepid. An examination of the vehicle revealed 22 packages containing a total of more than 26 pounds of marijuana hidden within the body of the Dodge. The marijuana from this seizure has an estimated street value of more than $26,000. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement special agents investigated the seizure. After a thorough review of the case, Luis Fabian Ramirez was turned over to the Brownsville Police Department for processing on state drug charges. “CBP officers are ever vigilant; these interceptions of dangerous narcotics are a direct result of that vigilance and dedication to the protection of our homeland. Our officers at the Brownsville port of entry continue to do outstanding work with tremendous results,” said Michael Freeman, CBP port director, Brownsville. U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws. |
