A Peoria County, Ill., grand jury indicted an inmate at the county jail for setting a fire in his cell.
Clarence L. Triplett, 30, of 1706 N. Linn St. faces charges of aggravated arson and arson in connection with the April 18 incident at the Peoria County Jail.
A fire alarm at the jail sounded about 9 a.m. that morning, moments before Correctional Officer Steve Dearing opened Triplett's cell and pulled him out. Other officers put the small fires out with fire extinguishers.
Neither the officer nor Triplett was seriously hurt. No one else was in the cell at the time of the fire.
Limestone Township firefighters responded to help ventilate smoke from the jail.
A lighter and handwritten diary was found in Triplett's jail cell, along with legal papers and paperback books. Triplett claimed not to remember anything about setting a fire. He had been in jail awaiting court on charges of aggravated robbery and armed robbery.
