| High court stays DUI work-release case |

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A Supreme Court justice Thursday agreed to stay a judge's order that a Coventry woman who killed two elderly sisters while drunken driving be placed on work release. Justice Francis X. Flaherty, acting as the on-duty justice, agreed to stay until Sept. 15 Superior Court Judge Stephen P. Nugent's ruling that Brandy Graff, 21, be allowed to work or attend classes while returning during her off hours to minimum security at the Adult Correctional Institutions. The Department of Corrections is trying to block Nugent's order, arguing that only the department director had the authority to change a prisoner's classification under state law. The corrections department asked for the stay while it appeals the issue to the high court. Read More. |
