PINELLAS PARK – Three employees at the July 23 City Council meeting were honored for their years of service. For Keith Sabiel, addressing challenges and helping people has kept him going for his 35 years with the city. “It’s been great growing with the city as it’s grown,” Sabiel said. “I always liked challenges and I get to help people.” Sabiel began his career on June 19, 1974 as an equipment operator in the water division. His promotions in the water department include utility repairman, foreman, supervisor and director. He became public utilities director in 2002 before starting his present post in 2007 as public works administrator/public utilities director. “Keith is known as the city’s go to man and currently oversees the water, sewer and reclaimed water and utilities design division,” said Mayor Bill Mischler. “He has been a terrific asset to our city for 35 years. The city has progressed to where it is through the efforts of this man.” What’s it like to serve and work in one place for more than three decades? “Honestly, I think the city is a great place to work,” Sabiel said. “When you are surrounded by good people, good things happen to you.” For Sabiel memorable times during his tenure include serving during natural disasters. He said helping after the 1992 tornadoes in the Autumn Run section of the city and as a part of a team helping with post hurricane disasters in South Florida stick out in his time with the city. One of Sabiel’s numerous projects in the city is the emergency response trailer that was constructed in 2007, which helps government agencies communicate after a storm. Sabiel and his wife, Tammy, live in Pinellas Park. They have two adult children and three grandchildren. He is active in his church and enjoys boating, fishing and snow skiing. His boating adventures include a recent journey across the Florida Straits to the Bahamas. The council also honored Thomas Guido and Michael Nelson both for 10 years of service. Guido, a senior recreation assistant started as a summer employee in 1999 and was promoted to his present post in 2003. Special programs he helped organize includes the Junior Olympics and the Punt, Pass, and Kick program. “Tom is a hard-working employee and an asset to the recreation division,” Mischler said. “It is not an easy job.” Nelson has been a community compliance specialist since 1999. He served 12 years in the Marine Corps Reserves and Army National Guard while he also worked as a corrections officer in New Hampshire and New York.
