Prison drug trade 'worth £22 million a year' The drugs trade in jails across England and Wales is worth at least £22 million a year, it has been claimed. 03 Aug 2009 The scale of substance abuse among inmates is highlighted in a new documentary showing footage of visitors smuggling in drugs to prisoners. Ministers have pledged to fight the trade but the BBC Panorama investigation suggests that the problem remains widespread. The £22 million estimate was leaked by a high-ranking prison official, but other sources told the programme that it could be up to four times that amount. One former prisoner told investigators that he could buy heroin "every day if I wanted". Earlier this month Maria Eagle, the prisons minister, said the UK was fighting a "constant battle" against the use of drugs by inmates as she toured Wormwood Scrubs Prison in West London. But Dominic Grieve, the shadow justice secretary, has criticised the prison service for giving drug addicts a heroin substitute through vending machines installed in jails. Read More. |
