Nevada officials isolate inmates in response to prison swine flu cases By Martha Bellisle August 3, 2009 Several cases of swine flu in the Nevada prison system and in the Elko jail, as well as suspected cases in Washoe County Jail, have prompted corrections officials to tighten protocols to protect inmates and staff. "So far, we've been very fortunate that we have not had a serious outbreak," said Howard Skolnik, director of the Nevada Department of Corrections. "Wish us luck because it's a confined environment, and if we get a serious problem, it could really escalate on us." On Friday, the Washoe County sheriff implemented a "precautionary quarantine" in a jail unit after six inmates showed flu-like symptoms within 48 hours, Deputy Brooke Keast said. Medical personnel were waiting to receive tests from the health department to determine whether the inmates had the H1N1 virus, she said. "Precautionary quarantines are not uncommon in custody situations," Sheriff Mike Haley said. "We take the health and safety of the inmates and the staff very seriously. It makes sense to be cautious and begin quarantine early in an attempt to control the spread of any illness and minimize the effect on all those involved as well as on our daily operations." One Nevada prison inmate and one staff member have tested positive for the H1N1 virus, Skolnik said. Nevada has 13,011 inmates. The High Desert State Prison inmate was isolated from others in his unit, and other prisoners and staff in his area were tested, Skolnik said. The inmate recovered. The staff member who tested positive was working in the central office, not in a correctional facility, so no inmates were affected, Skolnik said. Health officials have kept watch for outbreaks in prison after a swine flu outbreak in the California prison system began spreading. "The prisons serve as sentinels for us," she said. On Thursday, California had 200 suspected cases of swine flu in prisons with about 170,000 inmates, said Luis Patino, spokesman for the California Prison Health Care Services. The cases have led officials to take measures to confine cases and hopefully stop outbreaks, he said. Read More. |
