New Wardens At York, Corrigan Are Ready For The Move Up

During a time when the state Department of Correction is recovering from 425 of its employees retiring, including its commissioner, for two new wardens in the region the move to the top spot heading local correctional facilities was a natural one.

Anthony Coletti returned for the fourth time to Montville's Corrigan-Radgowski Correctional Center, this time as warden, and Kevin Gause advanced from being deputy warden to warden at the Janet S. York Correctional Institution in Niantic.

Both men said they were excited to get the news of their assignments a week before the state employees retired, on June 30. They had just days to prepare.

”The interim administration has made the right moves, putting people in the right places,” Coletti said. “There was a lot of thought and planning.”

Coletti, 49, describes coming back to Corrigan-Radgowski as a sort of homecoming.

Coletti spent 11 years at the Norwich Police Department and then started in corrections in 1988. He moved up the ranks from correction officer, captain, district captain, major, deputy warden and then warden, working at the Hartford Correctional Center, J.B. Gates Correctional Institution in Niantic, Brooklyn Correctional Institution, and Corrigan-Radgowski.

He's worked with many of the staff members for his entire career. He calls them a hardworking, professional group and he's enjoyed seeing the progress they've made.

”It's a family. It truly is,” Coletti said.

Coletti said he wants to build on the foundation set by former warden John Sieminski, who retired this summer. Sieminski and his staff created several programs that helped the community, like a lumber-assistance program and a garden that helped feed inmates and lower the cost of food for the correctional facility.
