A Shreveport, La., city employee is accused of making sexual advances on two City Jail inmates who were working under him as part of the jail's work-release program. Willie McDuffie, 67, was booked last Tuesday into Caddo Correctional Center on two counts of extortion and one count of malfeasance. He was being held on $10,000 bond. A Caddo grand jury indicted him on the charges last week. McDuffie, who works in the city's streets and drainage department, allegedly told the two female convicts he could reduce their sentences in exchange for sexual favors, Caddo Assistant District Attorney Hugo Holland said. When they rebuffed his advances, McDuffie allegedly threatened to add time to their sentences if they told anyone, Holland said. McDuffie had no power to reduce or add to the women's sentences, Holland added. Holland refused to identify the two women because of the nature of the crime. The case was opened in October 2002 after McDuffie allegedly fondled one inmate's breast and made lewd comments to her while en route to a work project, Shreveport police spokeswoman Kacee Hargrave said. The case did not conclude until authorities recently located another female inmate who made similar accusations against McDuffie, Hargrave said. It is too early to say how the arrest may impact McDuffie's employment with the city, Personnel Director Joe Lunt said. The case will be reviewed by McDuffie's department head, who would be the one to make any decision, Lunt said. The case is a good example of persistence by Shreveport police and prosecutors, Holland said. |
