Sheriff won’t lose 5 deputies, 5 corrections officers

HAMILTON — Jobs will be saved at the Butler County Sheriff’s Office thanks to a grant and union members who offered concessions. br>
Five deputies and five corrections officers slated to be laid off after this coming weekend will be able to keep their jobs, officials said Tuesday, Aug. 11. br>
The layoffs were averted partly because many union members — including corrections officers — gave up clothing allowances for the year and offered to take leave without pay, among other options, said Brett Casteel, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 101. br>
The concessions were made without opening the contract for renegotiations, Casteel said. br>
The department also recently learned it was awarded several hundred thousand dollars through a federal stimulus grant, said Deputy Chief Anthony Dwyer. br>
“Saving the majority of full-timers, that’s a big plus,” Dwyer said. “But we still have significant changes to make.” br>
