The 20-year-old Newberry man, who lost his right leg Tuesday night in a motorcycle wreck, remains in serious condition at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Justin Bruhn is a member of Indiana National Guard Alpha Company, Task Force 1-151 -- The Avengers -- based in Linton. He returned in December after doing a 13-month deployment in Iraq as part of operation Iraqi Freedom. His job during the deployment was a convey truck driver. Tuesday night, Bruhn and a passenger, Anthony Shute, 21, of Newberry, were traveling at a high rate of speed on a 1992 Honda motorcycle that left the roadway and struck a highway road sign before coming to rest in the southbound lane, according to a report filed by Indiana State Police Trooper Byron Goodman. His leg was severed on impact with the sign, according to his sister, Stacy Crane, of Dugger. Bruhn was transported from the scene of the 11:10 p.m. crash by a LifeLine medical helicopter to Methodist Hospital where he remains in the critical care unit. Shute suffered a head injury and was also transported to Methodist Hospital where he is listed in stable condition. Neither occupant was wearing a helmet, according to the investigating ISP officer. Bruhn's commanding officer, Capt. Andrew Wood said the accident was a shock to members of the National Guard unit. Capt. Wood, from Coal City, visited with him briefly Thursday at the hospital. "He did a phenomenal job for us in Iraq and he's just a phenomenal kid. The unit has really come together and is trying to support him and his family as much as possible," Capt. Wood told the Greene County Daily World on Friday morning. Wood explained that Bruhn and his step-brother, Spec. Brian Murvin, also of Newberry, both served with the 1-151 Avengers unit in Iraq. "He's a good soldier. He and his brother both did a phenomenal job for us," Wood added. "He's certainly in our thoughts and prayers. Right now, we are just trying to get the word out and certainly letting his friends and soldiers that he served with know of his situation." Bruhn is the second member of the 1-151 Avengers unit based in Linton to suffer serious injuries in a highway crash since returning from Iraq. In April, Spec. Ricky Raley, 23, of Sullivan who was handling the recruiting duties for eastern Greene County -- which includes Bloomfield, White River Valley, and Eastern Greene high school -- was seriously hurt in a Sullivan truck crash. While in Iraq, he earned a Purple Heart. Read More. |
