The Guilford Correctional Center near McLeansville will close Oct. 1, a state Department of Correction official confirmed Tuesday. The minimum security prison for men, on Camp Burton Road off Huffine Mill Road in eastern Guilford County, employs 52, has 158 inmates, and an operating budget last year of $3.4 million, said Correction spokesman Mike Stater. Guilford is among the casualties of the new 2009-11 state budget. Lawmakers followed through on Gov. Beverly Perdue’s recommendation to close Guilford and other correction facilities. The governor cited "above average operating costs" as the reason for closing Guilford and the Umstead Correctional Center in Butner. Correction officials are still working out the details regarding employee reassignments and other issues related to the closing but are "making every effort to offer those displaced jobs in other areas of the department," Stater said. "The number of employees that will need to be reassigned will depend on the actual number of vacancies at the prison." Read More. |
