Female Iraqis detained for months at the Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad are expected to be released soon, member of the US-appointed Iraqi Governing Council (IGC) Raja Khuzaai told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa last Thursday. "I talked with General Geoffrey Miller (head of US prisons in Iraq) personally and he informed me that two Iraqi women will be released shortly from Abu Ghraib," Khuzaai said in an interview. The three remaining women, she added, would be released later. Khuzaai, who recently spent four hours inspecting the Abu Ghraib prison, said the five women in the prison were arrested for helping their husbands in anti-US operations in Iraq. "One of the prisoners told me she was beaten by US soldiers when she was held in the Baghdad airport prison. The other four said they were not abused," she added. Most prisoners Khuzaai talked to asked for speedy trials to settle their fate: "There are huge numbers of prisoners who have been detained for months without someone looking into their case." "This is an urgent time to settle the issue of the prisoners who do not constitute a danger to the society," she added. At least 100 prisoners in Abu Ghraib were of other Arab nationalities, all accused to involvement in anti-US operations. "I talked to one of them who said he was Syrian from the city of Aleppo who came to Iraq to fight the Americans," Khuzaai said. Miller, she added, informed her that the Abu Ghraib prison will "undergo major changes, including those who will run the prison". Khuzaai's visit to Abu Ghraib is the first such by an IGC member since pictures of abuse of Iraqi prisoners shocked the world. Khuzaai has been active in urging for prisoners' rights, especially those of female prisoners. - Sapa-DPA |
