| Former Aide to Bill Clinton Charged With Prison Breach |

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Betsey Wright, Bill Clinton’s chief of staff during 7 of his 12 years as governor of Arkansas and later a senior member of his successful 1992 campaign for the White House, has been charged with carrying a pocketknife, a box cutter and tattoo needles into a state prison housing death row inmates. The items were seized on May 22 at a security checkpoint of the Arkansas prison system’s Varner Unit, where Ms. Wright, a vocal opponent of capital punishment, was about to pay one of her frequent visits on condemned prisoners, said the local prosecutor, Steve B. Dalrymple. Although the incident occurred three months ago, it went unpublicized until Mr. Dalrymple filed charges on Wednesday. During a routine screening at the prison, near Pine Bluff, a clear plastic bag in which Ms. Wright had placed her personal effects was found to contain the pocketknife and the box cutter, along with a pair of tweezers that had honed, pointed ends, the authorities said.
