Area correctional institutions plan canine training program

A budding partnership between Caldwell County Animal Control, the Christian County Animal Shelter and two area correctional facilities is being promoted as a win-win situation for all parties involved.

Representatives from the animal groups, the Kentucky State Penitentiary and the Western Kentucky Correctional Complex met Friday afternoon on the WKCC campus in Fredonia to announce plans for an inmate canine training program at both facilities.

Similar programs already exist at several other correctional facilities across the state, and state corrections officials have recommended the development of such programs at all remaining institutions.

Under the terms of the program, inmates at both facilities would be trained as dog trainers, then receive dogs from the local shelter to train themselves.
