| Deal frees convicted arsonist from prison |

A man serving four life sentences for a 1981 arson that killed four people on the South Side decided to forgo his efforts to get a new trial and accepted a plea deal for prosecutors that will allow him to leave prison later this afternoon. Mark Clements, 45, pleaded guilty to one count of murder in the death of Robert Watson, one of the four victims. In exchange, he was sentenced to time served, a little more than 28 years in prison. He is expected to be released from Pontiac Correctional Facility at about 4 p.m. Clements, who was 16 at the time of the murders, alleged his confession was coerced by Chicago police detectives after they beat him. In June, Circuit Judge Jorge Alonso granted his request to file a petition seeking a new trial. Following the judge's decision, special prosecutor Stuart Nudelman offered the plea deal. Read More. |
