| Changes ahead for Corrections Academy |

RIPLEY, W.Va. -- The West Virginia Corrections Academy will soon have a new home and a new way to train cadets. The academy will host a dedication ceremony for its new 40,000-square-foot facility at Glenville State College on Aug. 31. The training academy should be fully moved and operational at the new site on Jan. 1, said John Markley, deputy director of training. Until then, only two more basic training cadet classes will pass through the property the department now leases in Ripley, said John Markley, deputy director of training. The new facility, which used to be an old shoe factory in Glenville, was donated to the college and given to the DOC to develop a permanent training facility. The DOC is also going to refine the way they train their cadets, including cutting the physical course from six weeks to three weeks at the academy and including a hefty online class portion taken before attending the academy. The DOC will start using a learning management system owned by the state that will allow cadets to have up to six months to complete introductory training classes online before even attending the academy, Markley said.
