CARLISLE, Ind. (WTHI) - Authorities at the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility in Carlisle, Ind. believe one inmate strangled his cellmate. Officials said Patrick Whetstone, 25, was due to be released in October. They think his cellmate, Luis Silveria, 37, strangled him early Saturday morning. The two men have shared a cell since June 30 in the Special Needs Unit, for inmates with mental health issues. Investigators have not yet determined what sparked the attack. Whetstone was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Sullivan County Community Hospital at 7:13 a.m. Saturday, after a routine bedcheck about 6 a.m. Officials said Silveria to a guard he strangled his cellmate. Preliminary autopsy results indicate strangulation as the cause of death. Silveria has been placed in isolation pending the outcome of the criminal investigation. The cell house is still on lockdown. Whetstone was serving a 17 year sentence for convictions, including burglary and theft out of Kosciusko County in northeastern Indiana. Read More. |
