Austin County sheriff's investigators and Texas Rangers continued their search Monday for four men who burst into the Bellville ranch home of a prominent Houston doctor before killing him and wounding one of his hired hands over the weekend. No arrests have been made in Saturday's shooting death of Dr. Jorge Mario Gonzalez, 56, a pulmonary medicine specialist and chief of the critical care section of Methodist Hospital. But investigators released photographs of two suspect vehicles seen leaving the area moments after Gonzalez's wife called 911, including a pickup from which a gunman fired shots at a Bellville police officer responding to the distress call. “This is a very rural area — there's many ways in and many ways out,” Austin County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Paul Faircloth said Monday. “The (other) responding officers that came in did not encounter those subjects.” Officers found Gonzalez shot dead in a doorway of his ranch home after his wife, Charleen Taniel Chuke Gonzalez, 29, called 911 around noon to report a burglary on the 30-acre ranch. Investigators would not release the name of the wounded ranch worker Monday, but said he is in stable condition at an Austin hospital and has given them a statement. Motive not clear The doctor's wife and their 2-year-old son, Mario, hid during the attack and were not injured, authorities said. She is pregnant with the couple's second child. Faircloth would not say whether anything had been stolen from the home. “It's still unclear to us at this time … what the motive was for this crime,” he said. The ranch house was not opulent or showy, said Gonzalez's attorney. “It's not the kind of ranch house that would catch anyone's eye or make you think people with money live there — it has an above-ground pool,” said Houston attorney J. Reid Perry. Read More. |
