DARTMOUTH — A House of Correction prison guard was sent to the hospital Sunday night, sustaining head injuries after being attacked from behind by an inmate. Sheriff Thomas Hodgson said correctional officer William Sellers, 28, had ordered kitchen worker Arturo Zamora, of New Bedford, to take a cart back to the kitchen at around 5:30 p.m. Sunday night. Zamora, claiming that it needed more than one person to maneuver, refused to move the cart, Hodgson said, even when Sellers offered the help of another inmate. “With the inmate's refusal to follow orders, he was told to return to his cell and that he was fired from the inmate worker program,” Hodgson said. “The officer was walking him back to his cell when the officer looked back and was struck from behind.” Sellers’ head hit a hallway door after Zamora’s first punch, and according to the incident report, was knocked unconscious for about a minute. Hodgson said when Sellers awoke, he was getting hit in the face by Zamora. Sellers, a correctional officer for 11 months, was able to eventually stagger away from Zamora while other officers intervened. Sellers was later taken to the St. Luke’s Hospital emergency room, suffering from a broken nose and a number of lacerations to the face. Read More. |
