LYON MOUNTAIN — A convict was shot and captured late Tuesday morning after he spent more than 12 hours on the run. Authorities from several agencies spent Monday night combing the woods and roadways around Lyon Mountain Correctional Facility after Scott Adkins walked away from the prison and attempted to hide out in the surrounding wilderness. Prison officials say the 23-year-old was reported missing around 10:30 p.m. when he failed to show up for a master head count. When contacted about the escape, police launched an extensive search for the missing inmate and continued their efforts with aerial, canine and foot patrols Tuesday morning. By 10:30 a.m., authorities blocked off a portion of Route 374 and keyed in on the heavily wooded area to the north, where a helicopter could be seen steadily circling the non-residential area. According to State Police, off-duty correction officer Byron W. "Butch" Wing, had just passed through a checkpoint when he saw Adkins, who he recognized, enter the woods to the north of Chazy Lake Road. After Wing notified authorities, both marked and unmarked vehicles lined the state highway as police converged on the woods and established a tight perimeter. Read More. |
