PRINCESS ANNE -- A proposed facility for federal inmates in Somerset County would create 355 new jobs and bring a financial boost to the local economy, a contractor who hopes to build the facility said during a public meeting Monday night. Officials with Community Education Centers Inc. of West Caldwell, N.J., unveiled designs for a 1,500-bed minimum security prison for an 86-acre farm on Market Lane just south of Princess Anne. Somerset County is one of two finalists for a facility to be under contract to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Peter Argeropulos, CEC's senior vice president, told about 50 people at Washington High School. Another site in Winton, N.C., also is under consideration. Public meetings like the one Monday night are part of the selection process so officials can get a feeling for whether a detention facility will be accepted or not. "I hope we get a lot of support from the community," he said. "We feel this would be an asset to the county." Another meeting will be held tonight by the Federal Bureau of Prisons to get public comment on the possible environmental impact of the project. It will begin at 7 p.m. at Washington High School. Argeropulos said he wasn't sure how soon the Bureau of Prisons will decide on a location, but he expected it would be within 60 days. The facility proposed for Somerset County is designed as a minimum security prison. Inmates would likely be released near their homes or sent to re-entry programs once they complete their sentences, he said. Read More. |
