| Prison idea finds support |

PRINCESS ANNE -- Somerset County officials and residents threw their support behind a proposed facility for federal inmates, saying the county needs both the jobs and the tax revenues. "We all need to step back and take a look at reality," Crisfield Mayor Percy Purnell said during a public hearing Tuesday night at Washington High School. "Three hundred-plus jobs in this county can make a phenomenal impact." The proposal by Community Education Centers Inc. of West Caldwell, N.J., for a 1,500-bed minimum security prison for the 86-acre Miller farm on Market Lane just south of Princess Anne is one of two plans under consideration by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, said Isaac Gaston, a site selection specialist for the department. Another site in Winton, N.C., also is under consideration. Several people at Tuesday night's hearing said Somerset County was an ideal location because it has a group of well-trained officers ready to retire from nearby Eastern Correction Institution, who might want another job.
