Miami County to lay off 10 more officers

TROY — Miami County Sheriff Charles Cox notified 10 more correction officers Tuesday, Sept. 1, that they’ll be laid off effective Friday, Sept. 18.

The latest round of layoffs follow the May 29 layoffs of five road deputies and five correction officers, sheriff’s Capt. Dave Duchak said.

There are five additional correction officer positions that have been vacant. As of Sept. 18, the office will be down 20 correction officers.

The reductions are the result of the county commission’s request to department heads earlier this year to return an additional 4 percent from their budgets by year’s end.

That meant the sheriff’s office faced an estimated $600,000 shortfall this year in a budget of about $10 million.

At the time of the May layoffs, the sheriff’s office employed 135 — including 53 sworn officers, 70 corrections officers and 12 clerical and other staff.
