An inmate at the downtown Los Angeles Men's Central Jail tried to escape yesterday by breaking a window and using a makeshift rope, authorities said. The attempted escape from the lockup at 441 Bauchet St. occurred about 1:30 a.m., said sheriff's Capt. Ray Leyva. The man, whose name was not released, never made it outside, said sheriff's Sgt. Cruz Solis. "He had fashioned a rope from bedsheets and had smashed the window of the cell," Solis said. The attempted jailbreak resulted in a massive response by law enforcement personnel who searched the area in and around the jail. |
